When you browse coffee capsules, you'll notice a number on each box — usually between 1 and 10. This is the intensity rating, and it's one of the most useful (and most misunderstood) numbers in the coffee world.
What Is Coffee Capsule Intensity?
Intensity is a composite score that reflects three things: the roast level, the body (how thick and full the coffee feels), and the bitterness of the espresso. It is NOT purely a measure of caffeine content — a dark roast can actually have less caffeine than a lighter one.
Think of intensity like the "weight" of the coffee on your palate. A 3/10 feels light and delicate. A 10/10 is bold, thick, and assertive.
Intensity 1–4: Light & Delicate
These capsules suit people who prefer a gentle, aromatic coffee without a heavy body. Often described as "tea-like" or refreshing.
Sirius Coffee options:
- Alpine Breeze (3) — herbal, lemon, mint. A crisp lungo.
- Morning Mist (4) — floral, bergamot, green tea. A refined Kenyan lungo.
- Emerald Peak (4) — green apple, jasmine, honey. A bright Costa Rican espresso.
Intensity 5–7: Balanced & Approachable
The sweet spot for most coffee drinkers. These capsules have enough body to feel satisfying without being overwhelming.
Sirius Coffee options:
- Golden Sunrise (6) — citrus, honey, floral. A smooth Colombian espresso.
- Vanilla Dreams (5) — vanilla, caramel, cream. Light and indulgent.
- Hazelnut Heaven (6) — hazelnut, cocoa, toasted nuts.
- Caramel Bliss (5) — caramel, butter, brown sugar.
- Serene Sunset (5) — decaf with milk chocolate and almond.
- Amber Essence (7) — caramel, cinnamon, a rounded blend.
Intensity 8–10: Bold & Intense
For serious espresso drinkers. These capsules produce a thick crema, a deep aroma, and a lingering finish. Best drunk short (espresso or ristretto volume).
Sirius Coffee options:
- Ruby Roast (8) — berry, red wine, dark cherry. A complex Rwandan.
- Midnight Velvet (10) — dark chocolate, roasted nuts, dried fruit. Our darkest roast.
Which Intensity Is Right for You?
- Drink coffee black → go for 7–10
- Add milk or foam → 6–8 cuts through without getting lost
- Prefer gentle flavors → 3–5
- Evening coffee → decaf at 4–5 (Twilight Calm or Serene Sunset)
- New to espresso → start at 5–6 and adjust from there
A Note on Caffeine
Darker roasts (higher intensity) are actually slightly lower in caffeine than lighter roasts. The roasting process breaks down caffeine. So if you want maximum caffeine, a medium-intensity capsule is your best bet.
